Concrete block is the dominant masonry material in Morocco for load-bearing walls and partitions. Produced locally by hundreds of artisanal factories and a few industrial players.
Standard 20×20×40 cm block: 12.5 blocks/m² (without mortar). Plan 13 blocks/m² to cover losses.
In Morocco, hollow 20×20×40 block is standard for load-bearing up to R+2. For R+3+, use 25 cm hollow or poured concrete walls.
Straight clean edges, no cracks, dull sound when struck, conforming weight (≥14 kg for 20×20×40). Require NM-certified blocks for load-bearing walls.
Blocks are porous. In basements or damp zones, apply waterproof render on outer face. In new builds, include a damp-proof course between foundations and first rows.
In Morocco, block dominates for price and ease. Fired clay brick offers better thermal and acoustic inertia (+15-30% price) but requires a trained mason.
