Construction & Housing — Morocco's #1 portal 🇲🇦
Wall tiles (faience) are Morocco's standard kitchen/bathroom wall covering. Different from porcelain (floor): faience = red clay body + white/colored glaze, light, never for floors. Dominant: 25×60 cm rectified (modern look). 2026 trends: NY subway 7.5×15, large 30×90, industrial zellige patterns, glass mosaic.
Faience: waterproof, washable, hygienic, 30-50 year life, resale value. Cost 250-400 MAD/m² installed. Anti-moisture bath paint: 30-50 MAD/m², but redo every 3-5 years, less sealed around shower. Classic mix: faience in shower and behind vanity, paint on dry walls. Main bath: 100% faience. Guest bath: combination OK.
Subway tile (7.5×15 cm beveled) timeless 100 years (Paris/NY metro start of 20th c.). Still trendy 2026 in white/black/sage green. Modern variants: solid colors (sage, terracotta, Klein blue), chevron, contrasting grout. Modern/industrial kitchen and bath: excellent. Traditional Moroccan: prefer authentic zellige. Avoid orange/yellow (70s effect).
Standard 12 m² kitchen: backsplash (between cabinets, ~0.60 m height on 6 m linear) = 3.6 m². Hood + sink zone (floor to ceiling, 3-4 m²) = 7 m². Total: 10-12 m². 25×60 faience: 1,560 MAD material + 1,800 install = ~3,400. Subway: 1,800 + install = ~3,600. Full luxury floor-to-ceiling: 25-40 m² = 8,000-15,000.
1) Flat clean substrate (3 mm/2 m flatness). 2) Mark horizontal level line (laser) at 2nd row height from floor — NEVER start at floor. 3) C2 mortar adhesive (Mapei, Weber) with 6-8 mm notched trowel. 4) 2-3 mm spacers. 5) Start middle, progress to sides. 6) Diamond grinder for corners. 7) Waterproof grout 24-48h after (Mapei Ultracolor). 8) Immediate cement haze cleaning.
Standard cement grout (Mapei Ultracolor Plus, Weber): 25-65 MAD/5 kg bag, color range, integral water-repellent. Sufficient for SDB walls and kitchen. Two-part epoxy (Mapei Kerapoxy, Litokol Starlike): 350-800 MAD/kit, ultra-sealed, chlorine-resistant, 30+ years no maintenance. Required: walk-in shower, vanity, SDB floor, pool, hammam. Trickier install (fast cure).
