Handmade: unique pieces, deep colors, ideal for riads and luxury bathrooms. Machine: regular, 2-3× cheaper, faster install, ideal for modern kitchens.
How many m² of zellige for a bathroom?
Standard bathroom (4 m² floor): floor 4 + shower walls 8-12 + vanity backsplash 2 = 14-18 m² total. Plan 10-15% waste.
How to maintain zellige?
Weekly cleaning with warm water + traditional black soap. Avoid bleach, acids, abrasives. Re-whiten joints every 2-3 years. Properly laid zellige lasts 50-100 years.
Does authentic zellige only come from Fès?
Historically yes, but Salé also produces recognized zellige (Bejmat). Check: pieces cut with lessas hammer, slight color variations from artisanal firing, certified workshop origin.
Can zellige be installed outdoors?
Yes, traditionally used on facades, patios and fountains. Choose high-fired zellige (>1,050°C) for frost resistance in mountain zones. Waterproof joints required.
